Do you mean play for a National Championship? Because Troy Smith didn't win one last year.

According to wikepedia here are the years it differed Walter Camp winner 2003 Larry Fitzgerald (Heisman runner up to Jason White) 2002 Larry Johnson (Carson Palmer wins Heisman) 2000 Josh Heupel (Heisman Runner up to Chris Wienke) 1990 Rocket Ismail (Heisman Runner up to Ty Detmer) Thus the Walter camp award has lead to the Heisman 32/40 or 75% of the time. In these 4 most recent instances, especially 3 very recent, concern me. The Walter Camp winner should have won the Heisman in some of these years. Bad trend when the vote is close. Carson Palmer probably deserved it, but Jason White, Chris Weinke, and Ty Detmer?

Here are a list of the variations and who ended up winning the Heisman each year.
Year Camp vs Maxwell- Heisman in red (sorry Kyle) 2007 Darren McFadden vs Tim Tebow ??? 2006 Troy Smith vs Brady Quinn 2005 Reggie Bush vs Vince Young 2004 Matt Leinart vs Jason White 2003 Larry FitzGerald vs Eli Manning... Jason White 2002 Larry Johnson vs Larry Johnson... Carson Palmer 2001 Eric Crouch vs Ken Dorsey 2000 Josh Heupel vs Drew Brees... Chris Weinke 1999 Ron Dayne consensus 1998 Ricky Williams consensus 1997 Charles Woodson vs Peyton Manning 1996 Danny Wuerffel consensus 1995 Eddie George consensus 1994 Rashaan Salaam vs Kerry Collins 1993 Charlie Ward consensus 1992 Gino Toretta consensus 1991 Desmond Howard consensus 1990 Rahgib Ismail vs Ty Detmer 1989 Anthony Thompson vs Anthony Thompson... Andre Ware 1988 Barry Sanders consensus 1987 Tim Brown vs Don McPherson 1986 Vinnie Testeverde consensus 1985 Bo Jackson vs Chuck Long 1984 Doug Flutie consensus 1983 Mike Rozier consensus 1982 Herschel Walker consensus 1981 Marcus Allen consensus 1980 Hugh Green vs Hugh Green... Charles Rogers 1979 Charles White consensus 1978 Billy Sims vs Charles Fusina 1977 Ken MacAfee vs Ross Browner... Earl Campbell 1976 Tony Dorsett consensus 1975 Archie Griffin consensus 1974 Archie Griffin vs Steve Joachim 1973 John Cappelletti consensus 1972 Johnny Rogers vs Brad Van Pelt 1971 Pat Sullivan vs Ed Marinaro 1970 Jim Plunkett consensus 1969 Steve Owens vs Mike Reid 1968 OJ Simpson consensus 1967 OJ Simpson vs Gary Beban
So again breaking down the 40 years the Walter camp award has existed: 19 years the Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Heisman trophies belonged to the same man. 3 years the Walter Camp and Maxwell went to the same player, but that man did not win the Heisman That leaves 18 times the vote was split. 3 times the Camp/Maxwell split lead to a 3rd candidate getting the Heisman (not likely this year unless you believe Colt or Chase can over come the big 2) 2 times the split lead to the Maxwell Winner getting the Heisman 13 times the split lead to the Walter Camp winner getting the Heisman
So history seems to be on McFadden's side heading into Saturday, but how much can you rely on history when you've had more top teams upset than any other year and a 2 loss team playing for the National Championship basically at home?

let me just say: I just happened to be awake in the wee ours this morning, and got to watch the end of the presentation to Frank. Between that and the awards that DMC brought home, I don't see how we cannot get a new coach who actually wants to be here?
