Packed house greets Coach Van Horn at first Swatter’s Club meeting wholehogsports.com/story_whs.php?storyid=6914&paper=NWATstories2004We have high expectations for the future... We’ve even had some verbal commitments from players that, if we get some of these in here, then we will be able to make some promises," Van Horn said, adding that "We even beat Texas on a player from Texas." Scheduling continues to be tough for Arkansas, which prefers to play half of its nonconference games at home. Following their success in the CWS, though, the Hogs lost six of their tentatively scheduled games on the 2005 schedule. "And we’re not going to play Wichita State this year," Van Horn added dryly. "[WSU coach] Gene [Stephenson] just popped off one too many times." "We’ve got some physical players coming in this year that look like juniors... We may not be very good, but we can line up five or six guys to get off the bus first and scare some folks." Add D-I transfers to UA class wholehogsports.com/story_whs.php?storyid=22663&paper=ADGstories2004Also on the injury front, Van Horn said sophomore Danny Hamblin’s recovery from shoulder surgery is progressing nicely. After playing designated hitter most of a successful freshman year, Hamblin could start at first or third base this season. He can hit in fall practice but won’t be allowed to throw. Two other potential starters, senior second baseman/outfielder Scott Bridges and sophomore right fielder Steve Robison, could be limited in fall ball. Bridges will undergo surgery today to repair an ailing wrist. Robison fractured his left (glove) hand running into a fence in the Texas Collegiate summer league. A tentative 2005 schedule has been released but I can't find it online to link. I will get it put online myself. Hopefully tonight.

So how will this affect the 2 squads. I'd like to cram it down Gene's throat again for mouthing off, but that's just me.
On a larger scale, will WSU be hurt by not having and SEC caliber team on their schedule? Maybe they could find someone willing to play them from the Big 12,but it seems unlikely that any other SEC schools would travel up there.
Will it hurt us at all? Certainly, Kansas hasn't been a hot bed for recruiting so no damage there. But will we find a suitable opponent, a strong team in the region. I'd like to see us play OSU or OU every year.

Bubbs Merrill is in one of my classes and I spoke with him yesterday. Bubbs will be the Grad Student Assistant with the team. He also said that Wes McCrotty is back. He's going to be something like Team Manager or something along those lines. He said the New Coach is a real good guy and the grass on the field is absolutely awesome now.
That's all I got
Jim

168 days, 22 hours, 25 minutes, 26 seconds until opening day!! www.hognation.net/cd.htmlLooks to me like DVH is worried more about recruiting Texas than anything concerning WSU. Not sure it will help either team. Our strength of schedule will deffinitely take a hit, because WSU always has a good record. Can't really say that about the teams we added. Not that SOS is a major concern anyway. The coaching staff will deffinitely be interesting this year! :-)

For one thing b/c we own them and for another, I want to see the turnout for that. We might break 10k lol.

Nice board. I just registered. Welcome! Welcome! Feel free to jump right in. Most of us are just trying to pass the time until baseball rolls around again.

Anyone else notice that there is no early season tournament on this schedule? I saw some discussion about being under the limit as far as number of games. Playing 6 games in 3 days at A&M last year accounts for most of the difference in game count.
I was at Baum last weekend, while we were delivering the baby boy and his stuff. I was shocked at how good the field looked. I was really very pessimistic that they would even be able to use it for fall practice - But they were doing a camp on the field while we were there! Now it's not perfect, but from what I saw, it is at least as good as it was when the season ended. I saw a little sand kick up a couple of times as balls skipped across the infield, but I was VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. By the end of next spring, I expect the surface at Baum will be like everything else there - #1 in the country!

From what I understand Coach D had schedule us to play in the A&M tourny, so maybe DVH doesn't want to? Don't really know. I suppose there could be any number of reasons why.
