James McCann hit his fourth and fifth homers of the year Wednesday as the White Sox topped the Pirates 8-1.
No one could blame the White Sox for wanting to bring in Yasmani Grandal over the winter, but with McCann showing last year's numbers were no fluke, it's questionable whether the move was much of an upgrade for the team. McCann is batting .333/.392/.580 in 79 plate appearances. The White Sox can and occasionally do play both of their catchers at the same time, though since Jose Abreu, Eloy Jimenez and Nomar Mazara rank among the game's worst defenders at their respective positions and Edwin Encarnacion usually DHs, that's not really optimal, either.

Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Mets are "in active talks" with free agent catcher James McCann.
Murray adds that a "deal is not close" but also that "it is looking increasingly likely he will land a four-year deal." The implication there is that the ongoing negotiations with the Mets are fairly serious. McCann was named an American League All-Star in 2019 and has posted a strong .808 OPS with 25 home runs and 75 RBI in 149 games over the last two years with the White Sox. The 30-year-old is probably the second-best catcher on the free agent market behind J.T. Realmuto, who was also thought to be a target of the Mets at one point.
