Giants signed LHP Drew Smyly to a one-year, $4 million contract.
Smyly struggled to a 6.24 ERA in 21 starts and four relief appearances last season between the Rangers and Phillies, but he struck out 120 batters over 114 innings and pitched decently well down the stretch. The 30-year-old southpaw will presumably get a shot to win a spot in the Giants' starting rotation leading into 2020. He could also be an option as a long man in the bullpen.

Drew Smyly (finger) will be shut down for the next 7-10 days.
Smyly was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday after straining a finger on his left (throwing) hand during his start Saturday night against the Rangers. Given the total shutdown period, and the necessary build-up to follow, it's likely that the 31-year-old southpaw will remain on the IL for much of August.

Braves signed LHP Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11 million contract.
Can't say we saw this coming, at least as far as the timing is concerned, though the Braves were active early last offseason as well. Still, Smyly is a good gamble. While staying healthy has been an issue, the 31-year-old put up a 3.42 ERA and 42/9 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings over five starts and two relief appearances this past season. He also showed a healthy uptick in velocity compared to previous seasons. The Giants had interest in bringing him back, but they might not have been willing to top this offer after bringing back Kevin Gausman with a one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer. Smyly will join a Braves' rotation which projects to include Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, and hopefully Mike Soroka as he returns from an Achilles tear.
