D.J. Williams is currently the top "move" tight end on the Patriots.
In other words, the Patriots don't have anyone to play the "F" position once held by Aaron Hernandez. Williams is a borderline NFL player with nine catches in 35 career games. Tom Brady projects to use a three-wide formation featuring Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Aaron Dobson as his base.

The Patriots' website considers D.J. Williams a long shot to make New England's 53-man roster.
Williams is the Patriots' top "move" tight end, but his roster spot won't be guaranteed if Rob Gronkowski (knee) is available for Week 1. Michael Hoomanawanui is a lock to return after re-signing to a two-year deal in March and New England likes blocking FB/TE James Develin. Williams is the only player capable of playing the "F" position in the Patriots' offense and will push for a role in two tight-end sets if he makes the team.

Patriots waived TE D.J. Williams and DT Marcus Forston.
Williams had been sidelined for over two weeks with a leg injury. We suppose his release could be a vote of confidence in Rob Gronkowski's health, but Williams was always a roster long-shot. One month shy of his 26th birthday, Williams hasn't caught a pass since 2012.

Bucs signed TE D.J. Williams and TE Cameron Brate.
WR Marcus Thigpen has been waived. The fact that the Bucs have signed two tight ends can't be considered a good sign for Austin Seferian-Jenkins' (back) Week 13 status. Williams appeared in nine games between the Patriots and Jaguars last season, catching zero passes.

The Redskins are hosting free agent TE D.J. Williams on Sunday.
He's being put through a workout as the Redskins prepare to place both Niles Paul (ankle) and Logan Paulsen (toe) on injured reserve. A 26-year-old journeyman, Williams was the Packers' fifth-round draft pick in 2011.
