John Daly concluded the Sony Open in Hawaii with an even-par 37-33=70 to post 7-under 273, good for a share of 32nd place worth $30,986.67 and 36.50 FedExCup points.

Given that he irritated his right elbow during a wild 73 in the second round -- he had surgery on the joint last July -- and then chased it with a 64 on Saturday, the result is as good as expected for the polarizing pro. It's his best finish on the PGA TOUR since the 2012 PGA Championship. The only problem is that he needed no worse than a solo second to retain status. (The same finish was required for conditional status as only FedExCup points were applicable.) Instead, he fell short of meeting the terms of his Non-exempt Medical Extension by $520,953. Daly was 223.50 FedExCup points below the minimum required for conditional status. He'll head to the Humana Challenge on a sponsor exemption but does so with a demotion in status as he'll play out of the Past Champion category for the remainder of the season.

John Daly went ahead and signed for a 19-over-par 43-47=90 following his second round of the Valspar Championship.

This was vintage. JD went 0-for-8 in birdie opportunities and squared five bogeys, three doubles and a 12 at the par-4 16th hole where he rinsed three tee balls. He posted 22-over 164. Today's score is Daly's highest on the PGA TOUR. It eclipses the 89 that he carded in the second round of the 2008 Open Championship. The 90 is the highest aggregate on the circuit since Zack Miller's 92 in the second round at Mayakoba in 2012. When Daly penciled in an 18 on the par-5 sixth hole in the final round at Bay Hill in 1998, he still managed an 85 and beat two others that also completed 72 holes. That won't be the case today as no one was within 11 swings of him when he walked off Copperhead.
