The SEC is the best college football league in the country, without exception. The other pretenders’ attempts at a better TV network (see Big 10or11, Longhorn) just goaded the big boys into an even more encompassing, mind-boggling cash cow. But the incredible payout won’t come without demands, as we already see from the 2014 schedule. Some things taken as traditions are trampled by expansion. (Sorry – I said “inconvenienced” but autocorrect printed “trampled”)
And, of course, the tail wagging the dog will want more. Many suspect/expect a 9-game conference slate to be presented soon, which presents a new set of problems. Primarily: How can it possibly be fair to have 5 home games for some teams and only 4 for others? The answer is simple, and it has been right in front of our faces for years: Neutral site games.
Georgia-Florida has dealt with this for decades - without detriment to either program, I might add. Arkansas and Texas A&M were having a fine time with the Southwest Classic, until the Aggies entrance into the SEC caused that to cost one team or the other a home conference match-up. That already creates a scheduling problem for the Razorbacks when the series returns to Dallas next season, but Hog fans should consider it growing pains. Fans of great college football should consider this a prime opportunity.
Would Tennessee and Vanderbilt fill the Titan’s stadium annually, if the Volunteers still got 4 home SEC games? Can you picture Missouri and Kentucky in St Louis? Would the Georgia Dome or the new Atlanta stadium love to host the opening SEC game every season, perhaps with different teams from the league each year? This way Ole Miss might get a chance to play there. Sure, there will be problems (neutral sites might occasionally be “neutral” in name only, ie: Superdome, etc.), but overall this gets the SEC Network 7 (presently) extra games, with many of them marquee matchups or venues and without costing ADs that valuable home-game payout.
Pretty simple, don’t you think?
