A new national college football award honoring former Arkansas All-America guard Brandon Burlsworth will be given this year by the Springdale Rotary Club to a player who, like Burlsworth, arrived on campus as a walk-on.
Burlsworth came to Arkansas from Harrison as a walk-on in 1994, eventually earned a scholarship, started 34 games and was an All-American as a fifth-year senior in 1998.
By the end of his Razorbacks career, Burlsworth had competed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in marketing and business administration. He died in a car accident in April 1999 after being a third-round NFL Draft pick by Indianapolis.
A news conference to officially announce the Burlsworth Award will be held Monday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Speakers will include Frank Broyles, Ken Hatfield, Danny Ford and Jim Lindsey.
