I’m going to use this thread to post some things that I need more information on for HogNation. If anyone has any free time and feels like helping us out that would be great. If you already have some information that I’m looking for please let us know. The Where are they now? page is as good a place as any to start. This page is so big that it’s hard for me to keep up with most of it. I’ve put the ‘last updated’ information right under the name and anything that hasn’t been updated in over a year needs to be checked and updated. I would always prefer that you send me documentation if at all possible.

Some info on Steed White: www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=6100&ATCLID=1483154STEED WHITE
White lettered in football in 1946 and 47, and had two stints as an assistant coach. He was an assistant in 1957 and again from 1961-63 as offensive line and ends coach. Arkansas went 6-4 in ’57, 8-3 with a Southwest Conference co-championship and No. 9 final ranking in ’61, 9-2 with a No. 6 final ranking in ’62 and 5-5 in ’63. The Razorbacks played in the 1962 and ’63 Sugar bowls. The 1946 team was 6-3-2, but was co-champion of the Southwest Conference and made Arkansas’ first appearance in the Cotton Bowl, tying No. 8 LSU, 0-0. The Razorbacks ended the year ranked No. 16 in the nation. The 1947 team was 6-4-1 and recorded the first bowl victory in school history with the 21-19 win over William & Mary in the Dixie Bowl.
From "The Razorbacks: a story of Arkansas football By Orville Henry, Jim Bailey" (Searchable via Google Books): Page 166-167 (regarding Broyles' coaches for the 1958-59 season): "Dixie White and Steed White (not related) stayed on from Jack Mitchell's staff to coach the line." It also looks like he might have been at Arkansas Tech before coming here: athletics.atu.edu/fb-all-conference.htmHe was inducted into the Bauxite Sports Hall of Fame too (which might tie the ATU connection above): www.hogalumni.com/athletics/coach_powell.htmlNine former athletes and coaches will be inducted into the Bauxite Sports Hall of Fame at its second annual induction dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Bauxite Community Center. This year's inductees include Paul Sweeten, Charles Campbell, Steed White, Ralph Brooks, Russell Baxley, Rip Powell and Dennis Massey. Wall of Honor inductees are Melton Fulcher (Exemplary Service) and Bob Carlisle (Distinguished Alumni). Tickets may be purchased at Bauxite High School, Dr. Robert Carlisle's office, Tractors and More, Tire Town and at any football game at Bauxite High School. There's a picture of him here: www.tennessee.gov/tsla/exhibits/majors/majors05.htmUniversity of Arkansas Coaching Staff, 1966
After Mississippi State, Majors joined the Arkansas coaching staff under legendary head coach Frank Broyles. Front (l to r): John Majors, Jim McKenzie, Frank Broyles, Wilson Matthews, Bill Pace. Back (l to r): Steed White, Jack Davis, Barry Switzer, Mervin Johnson, Lou Ferrel.
From You Can Go Home, by Johnny Majors with Ben Byrd, 1986.And another pic here: www.hogdb.com/razorback-photos/displayimage-topn-30-365.htmlLooks like some good bio information here too: www.fanbase.com/Steed-White/careerCoaching career
Arkansas Football Assistant Coach
1967 1966 1965 1964 1963 1962 1961 1960 1959 1958 1957
He was Wilson Matthew’s lone assistant at Little Rock Central until the fall of 1954 when he was hired at Fort Smith High to revitalize their program. At Central the Tigers were perennial State Champs and were nationally ranked. Steed took over at Fort Smith and during his 3 year tenure made such great hires as Gayle Kaundart and John Lunney.
He was chosen to be the Head Coach for the West in the very first High School All Star Game and won. He was fortunate to coach some great players at Fort Smith including Joe Paul Alberty and Jarrell and Darrell Williams who all later followed him to the University of Arkansas.
In 1957 Coach Barnhill hired Steed to come to the University to coach offensive line. He worked for Jack Mitchell that first year, but “Barney” had a plan, he was bringing Frank Broyles the next year and he was already hiring assistants for him. That next year Wilson Matthews joined the staff and the rest is history. They went to their first Cotton Bowl in 1960 when they won Broyles’ first SWC Championship. Over the next 11 years Steed was on the staff, the hogs played in 3 Cotton Bowls, the Dixie Bowl, the Gator Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. This included the National Championship Team of 1964.
During his tenure he coached extensively on the offensive line and is credited nationally with developing the ‘scramble blocking technique” along with his good friend Dixie White. He spoke at many clinics nationally on this technique. He finished his career at the University as the Recruiting Coordinator. He was well known all over the state and the southwest as a close ally to the high school coaches. He never forgot his roots as a high school player and coach. He retired to Bella Vista in 1968 and worked in real estate the rest of his life. He died on June 18th, 1984 at the VA in Little Rock of a heart attack. Steed was very proud to be a miner and I remember he used to quip, “I’m Steed White from Bauxite”.
Steed was inducted into the Bauxite Hall of Fame in 2007 and into the University of Arkansas Hall of Honor in 2008.
Playing career
Arkansas Football
1947 1946
This was a tough stretch of time in that he served over 4 years overseas in the North African and European Theaters. Upon graduating from Tech, Steed and others from the team were recruited by Coach John Barnhill to come to the University of Arkansas and play ball in the fall of 1946.
Steed played on the 46 and 47 teams. He played offensive and defensive guard. He was fortunate enough to get to play in the 1947 Cotton Bowl against LSU. The game was dubbed the “Ice Bowl” because of the terrible weather. Upon graduating from the University of Arkansas, Steed coached high school football for the next 10 years.
Arkansas Tech Football
1945
Attended Arkansas Tech and played football for Coach John E. Tucker for one year before WWII then one year after. The 1945 team at Tech was undefeated and only scored on one time. Steed was named to the All State Team, now called All AIC.

Your hard work does not go unnoticed dale. Use the hognation page all the time when people mention something about razorback history in our daily conversations. I also like to look at who is playing where in all the sports. Nice to have somewhere to keep up with the guys I grew to love as Razorbacks
