But our 1 was the last time we were the challenger (LSU on 11/23/07). Of course, we lost the belt to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.
It bounced through the Big 12 last year going from Missouri to OSU to Texas to Texas Tech to Oklahama before Florida reclaimed it in the BCS Championship game.
It's actually a little surprising with the flux of the Belt, how many times the BCS chmpionship game has been for the title. Out of the 11 BCS Chapionship games, 7 have involved the belt.
4 of those 7 were won by the Challenger
2009 Florida took it from OU
2007 Florida took it from Ohio State
2006 Texas took it from USC
2003 Ohio State took it from Miami
2005 USC successfully defended against OU
2002 Miami defended against Nebraska
2000 Florida State defended against Virginia Tech
The other 4 season where the belt wasn't involved in the Championship were:
2008 Arkansas as mentioned above stole it on the last game of the regular season in OT from eventual BCS Champion LSU.
2004 #3 USC took it from #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl while LSU was Beating OU in the BCS championship.
2001 #3 Miami defended against #7 Florida in the Sugar bowl while OU beat FSU for the BCS title. Miami was a couple months into a more than 2 year run that ended with the BCS game in 2003.
1999 Texas defended against Mississippi St in the Cotton bowl while Tennesse beat FSU for the BCS title
