I think college sports fans have 3 basic areas of expectations for their teams.
1- Win 2- Get an education 3- Be a good representative of your state/school/hometown and/or be a good example for younger kids and athletes
The emphasis on each area varies from individual to individual. However, it is generally a sliding scale. Success in one area allows fans to overlook weaknesses in the others. If you win, people don't complain as much if you're a jerk who doesn't graduate. If you have high academic standards like Vandy, no one expects you to win as much.
The problem is the basketball program hasn't shown much in any of the three areas for fans to embrace. Tearing it completely down and starting over may be a bit extreme, but the program is definitely broken and needs fixed. This started before Pelphrey took over, so this is not a "fire Pel" rant.
Fans want to support the program. They want the program to be successful. The program needs to give fans something they can get behind.
