KU Jayhawks Win Season Opener 4 - 1 Jayhawks Goaltender Outstanding Stopping 42 of 43 Shots
The KU hockey team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in their home opener, 4 - 1, thanks largely to an outstanding goaltending performance by Lucas Renard. Despite being badly outshot (43 to 23) the Jayhawks prevailed in a penalty filled game, in which they were short handed for all but 1:43 of the second period.
Jayhawk rookie, Warren Cutbill scored the games first goal to give KU a 1-0 lead three minutes into the period. Jake Mitchell made it 2-0 seven minutes later, after getting a heads up pass from last years MACHA leading scorer, Erik Bredesen. The Razorbacks cut the lead in half when forward Luke Parsons knocked in a rebound shot to make the score 2-1. One minute later Jayhawk captain, Kevin Kiske scored a power play goal to make the score 3-1. With 25 seconds left in the period, KU rookie forward, Matt Berard poked in a lose puck in front of the Razorbacks net to give Kansas a 4-1 lead after one period.
Renard was the difference for KU the rest of the game and was unbeatable in the last two periods. The Razorbacks outshot KU 20-3 in the second period but couldn’t get the puck past Renard, despite 7 power play opportunities. KU defenseman Ryan Jobe received a game disqualification (for fighting) and will not play this afternoon.

Razorbacks Topple KU 7 - 5 In Game 2 Jayhawks Erik Bredesen Scores 3 Goal Hatrick In Loss
The Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the KU hockey team 7-5 on Saturday night, despite a 3 goal performance by Jayhawks leading scorer, Erik Bredesen. The loss evened KU’s record at 1-1. KU took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by rookie Brendan Colbert but the Razorbacks came right back and scored a power play goal to make the score 1-1. Bredesen gave KU a 2-1 lead two minutes later and scored his second goal of the game with 24 seconds left in the 1st period and KU led after twenty minutes 3-1. The Razorbacks dominated the second period and outscored the Jayhawks 4 goals to 1 and took a 5-4 lead into the third period. Razorback players Easton Oliver, Jacob Larison and Justin Gardner each scored a goal while Tyler Cook scored his second of the game. Razorback goalie Brendan Desjardins stopped 8 of 9 shots in the period.
KU tied the game at the 11 minute mark of the 3rd period when Erik Bredesen scored his third goal of the game but that was as close as it would get for the Jayhawks. A defensive lapse occurred when KU gave up the puck in their own zone late in the game and Razorback forward Brad McMahon quickly put the puck in the net, giving his team a 6-5 lead. Arkansas scored an empty net goal to make the final score 7-5.

The Arkansas Razorbacks hockey team boasts the Southern Conference’s best record with a total of 14 points and are second to only Lake Superior State University in all of Division 3. The first rankings were released on Friday morning, with the Hogs ranked #9 in the Southern Conference. This marks the first time that Arkansas has been voted into the top 10 in team history. This weekend, the team will bring its’ newly-acquired #9 ranking on the road against Robert Morris University. Robert Morris will be the 6th Division 2 team that Arkansas has already played this season.www.achahockey.org/page.php?page_id=18083&league_id=1063
