nwanews.com/blogs/slophouse/2009/07/29/dj-williams-on-mackey-award-watch-list/It's not much of a surprise, but junior tight end D.J. Williams was named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List today by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The John Mackey Award is given annually to the nation’s best collegiate tight end. Williams joins 29 other tight ends across the nation on the list and is the only returning semifinalist from last season. Williams set a school record for a tight end with 61 catches for 723 yards last season for the Razorbacks. His pass-catching ability and hard-nosed demeanor after the catch is undeniable. He bounced off a few for-certain tackles last season in games and stayed on his feet for several more yards and dozens more decibels from the yelling crowds at Razorback Stadium. Coach Bobby Petrino's only real knock against the junior is his blocking ability, which Williams told me a few weeks ago was an aspect he's been working hard on during the summer. The Mackey Award winner will be announced Dec. 10. UPDATE (6:39 p.m.): Former Oklahoma tight end Keith Jackson, who is now an analyst for Arkansas' football radio broadcasts, is on the Mackey Award selection committee.
