The last time John Daly won a major -- 14 years and countless mullet wig trims ago -- he fired an opening round 67. On Thursday at Turnberry, Daly, sporting a buzzcut , lap-band (not visible without surgical tools) and garish get-up, turned in a 68. This could be the first sign that his new-and-improved lifestyle and recommitment to golf is finally paying off. Or, just as likely, it could be nothing -- an aberration, the calm before the metaphorical storm.
Tied for 21st with a 68 in round 1

ESPN.com's Jason Sobel blogs that Daly is “apparently dressed with the clothes of 10 leprechauns stitched together.”
Robert Winder of London's The Independent described Daly's ensemble as “mint-green, do-not-adjust-your-set clown's trousers.”

Tiger Woods shot 5-over-par 71-74=145 at the British Open and will miss the cut.
With seven bogeys and two bogeys, Woods failed to avoid the big number this week. He birdied his 34th and 35th holes to give himself a chance at making the cut, but a missed chip from the back of the 36th left him one stroke on the outside looking in. It's the first time in 14 career amateur and professional starts that he's missed the British cut. It's also his first missed cut anywhere since the 2006 U.S. Open, one month after his father had passed away. And it's his first finish outside the top-10 in a stroke-play event anywhere since the 2007 British at Carnoustie, where he placed T-12.
