Minnesota has dominated the Big Ten in recent years, winning three titles in a row and four of the last five. The Golden Gophers return all but one regular position player, but suffered heavy losses on the pitching staff. Their primary task will be replacing Big Ten pitcher of the year Glen Perkins (9-3, 2.83 with a conference-leading 113 strikeouts), whom the hometown Twins drafted in the first round last year. The team's primary offensive weapon is junior 1B Andy Hunter (.366-10-66), who drove in more runs in his first two years than any Minnesota player in school history other than former big leaguer Terry Steinbach. Hunter will split the first base and DH duties with sophomore Mike Mee (.319-6-53), who was the first Gopher freshman to drive in more than 50 runs since Steinbach in 1981.
