Patriots waived/injured TE AJ Derby.
Derby's injury is undisclosed, though he underwent knee surgery last November. Ax ex-quarterback, Derby offers plus athleticism at tight end, but entered camp as a major project. He'll hit injured reserve if/when he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Patriots TE A.J. Derby caught 6-of-7 targets for 71 yards and a touchdown in Thursday night's second preseason game.
"Redshirted" as a sixth-round rookie last year, Derby has moved into the driver's seat for No. 3 tight end duties behind Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett. Derby has nine grabs for 118 yards and the score on 11 targets through two preseason games. This will only be Derby's second full season at tight end after he converted from quarterback as a senior at Arkansas. Derby stands 6-foot-4, 255. He ran 4.72 at the Razorbacks' 2015 Pro Day.

AJ Derby caught 2-of-3 targets for 22 yards Week 10 against the Saints.
Acquired from the Patriots three weeks ago, Derby saw three fewer targets than starter Virgil Green, but he had the same number of catches and finished with just two fewer yards. Derby also saw plenty of snaps, playing 45 of a possible 84. Green led the tight-end group with 59 snaps. This is still clearly Green's job, but Derby could provide some pressure as he becomes more comfortable in the offense.

Broncos waived/injured TE A.J. Derby with a shoulder injury.
Derby had already been ruled out for Week 11 with a shoulder injury, and it is apparently a serious issue. He will revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers. Denver promoted TE Austin Traylor from the practice squad in a corresponding move, but Virgil Green should serve as the primary option at tight end.

Dolphins claimed TE AJ Derby off waivers from the Broncos.
Rashawn Scott was waived in the corresponding roster move. A shoulder injury sidelined Derby earlier this month, but he must be trending toward full health if Miami was willing to use a waiver claim on him. He gives the Fins some depth behind starter Julius Thomas.
