Went down to Dickson Street to check out the Celebration of a Razorback (and cheerleaders ). There were more people than I expected. The big hullaboo was that the school and athletic department were celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Razorback name. Frank Broyles kicked things off in his Rah-Rah style and told his version of Hugo Bezdek's naming the team a wild band of Razorbacks. Then the train blew it's horn to signal Coach Petrino, members of the football team and Coach Bezdek's arrival. Yeah Coach Bezdek was there, even if it was a character actor who channeled the spirit and told the story of beating LSU 16 - 0 in 1909. Jeff Long Spoke (more in a min) Brought Dave Van Horn up for much needed props for his College World Series run. David Gearhart spoke. Fred Vorsanger spoke (Fayetteville proclaimed today as Razorback Day? Chuck Barrett spoke (Gov. Beebe proclaimed pretty much the same thing) and last Bobby Petrino. Autograph signings with various athletes and coaches that were in town over the summer. Longest lines belonged to Mallett, Petrino and Broyles. Crowds died out around 7:30 pm. Ok back to Jeff Long. Along with celebrating the Razorback in all 19 sports there were 3 fan interactive contests that would be conducted througout the year. 1. Fans will vote for the top 100 greatest moments in Razorback History. 2. RAZORBACK LEGENDARY FANS (Bobby's ears perked up) 3. The Razorback Fan of the Century (something to do with voting for the top fan out of the 12 nominees) They had a Razorback Legendary Fan Nomination Form at the info desk. I'm sure they will be available online for people to print out. It reads as follows. "The Legendary Fans are the 12 "superfans" as nominated by their peers and thletic department staff, and featured one per month during the Year of the Razorbacks. The selection process for Razorback Legendary Fan begins with nominations, which include a short essay about why the nominee should be considered a Legendary Fan. The nominations can be submitted on-line, or by filling out the Legendary Fan form and returning it to the Razorback Athletic Department. Members of the 100 Years of Razorback Committee select of the Legendary Fans. Each Legendary Fan will be honored at a Razorback home event when possible during the 2009-10 season."Then it has the info you need to fill out to nominate a fan. So there it is in a nutshell or petrinoshell for you nutt haters.

So I assume we will be nominating Bobby? Who is going to take care of that?

So I assume we will be nominating Bobby? Who is going to take care of that? I think Bobby can take care of it himself. I foresee an election campaign blitz coming our way from the Maloney Marketing Group. People who I think may be considered. I wonder if Bubba Hog will get a serious look or if they want to avoid perpetuating the redneck stereotype. They did stop playing NFL Today so he couldn't dance. It's a shame. I sure hope that Bill Clinton gets one too. C'mon he was a superfan in 1994 while he was President. That has to count for something. Then there is the Fat Guy who slid across the basketball court at Barnhill. I would also recommend the old lady who used to be at all the baseball games. The police used to pick her up at her house on campus and drive her down to the stadium. Dick Trammel is a former cheerleader and is pretty much a big deal in NWA. His love for the Razorbacks is known throughout the towns. I bet Fritchie nominates himself like a million times.

"We had some fun with it, and people had some wild ideas about what our announcement was," Athletic Director Long said. "We knew it would be a fun time to get our fans together no matter what. We did get some calls from some concerned supporters and maybe a trustee here and there who was concerned they didn't know what the big announcement was. That was kind of fun, as well."
I'm not sure the whole of Razorback fans enjoyed the little trick.

IMO, it was pretty lame. I didn't whip myself into a frenzy expecting a big announcement, they TOLD me it was going to be a big announcement. The celebration of the Razorback is a cool idea, I like the logo, but it's the kind of thing that is better served with a press conference. If they wanted to do the Bezdek thing, they should have told people what was going to happen. I think everybody probably would have appreciated it more. As it is it makes Jeff Long and the rest of the athletic department seem like they don't know how seriously Razorback fans take Razorback athletics.
Also the timing of it is weird to me and I would have done it closer to a football game when there would be a lot more people in town.
I think fans are expecting a lot from the new "professional" administration and were hoping to hear about something that would improve the program. I don't think you can blame the fans for being let down on this one, and I normally don't give our fanbase much slack.
As it was it felt like Vince McMahon booked it. It was classic WWE. The big announcement turns out to be that Shane is the new commish or whatever.
Plus I can't help but think how Razorback fans will respond in the future when there really IS a big announcement. Are they going to care as much next time?

Count me among the idiots.
I believed the hype of the 30+ Twitter messages and multiple e-mails from the UA reminding me of this event. We were in Texas and considered making it back in time for the big event. We ended up getting back to town later in the evening. If we had made a special effort to be back for this, I would have been very disappointed. The skit and activities sounded neat enough, but not the big event that was built up. Charlie's views cover the sentiments I've heard from others.
Blame the fans and talk shows if you want, but the athletic department cried "wolf" on this one.

I really can't argue any of these points at all. Would we have Oreo Blue performing at an announcement of DWRRS expansion? Would such a press conference have taken place on Dickson? Or a commitment by Dyer? Or Greene gaining eligibility? Or a coach getting an extension? Or a change in the TV package? Or pretty much anything that would be warrant a press conference? Try this: What announcement WOULD have warranted an early trip back from Texas? If you are going to build a stage, commandeer a train and make such a production - shouldn't you try to make it a big deal? Again - yes, they could have let us know. But they wouldn't have made any fewer tweets and texts. Amazing that we are all ignoring the most blatant disappointment in the whole deal, having to do with ALL the new stuff to get with the NEW Logo! Ralphie knows how that feels:

I wasn't looking for any announcement, sorry if it came off that way. They also don't beg people for a month to come to any of those press conferences. I thought the unveiling of the logo would be it for "announcements". So the plaque was actually a pleasant surprise, and the train arrival was a good way to lead into it. If there was an additional announcement, I thought it might be unveiling 1964 or 1969 throwback uni's. I guess I just thought there would be more in terms of things for fans to do and (even though school is out) a bigger showing from the teams. I'm truly glad that they are making an effort to reach out to fans and to drum up support for all our programs in the dog days of summer. My perception is just that the entire event was not as a big of a deal as it was hyped to be.

ArkansasRazorbacks.com has put more details about the Legendary Fan criteria. www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=6100&ATCLID=204765605FAYETTEVILLE -- You sit by them at home games, you see them at road games and they are a huge part of our Razorback Nation. Now, you can make sure they receive their due by nominating them as Legendary Fans.
During the 2009-10 season, the University of Arkansas Athletic Department wants to honor its Legendary Fans. Starting in September, one Razorback supporter per month will be honored.
Nominate your Legendary Fan, and your 100-word essays are reviewed by the 100 Years of the Razorback committee to select the 12 Legendary Fans.
What is a Legendary Fan? Some of the criteria are obvious:
-- Long-time supporter of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.
-- A wardrobe filled with Cardinal and White.
-- Can tell what the difference between an Uncle Heavy and a modern era Hog Hat.
-- And knows that indeed, Hogs Smell Good.
However, we are looking for that special difference that separates a super fan from a Legend.
A Legendary Fan has:
-- Gone above and beyond to attend events, or bring family members to events.
-- Has been a supporter through the good times and bad.
-- Serves as a model to his friends and his seating section of what being a Razorback fan means.
-- A compelling personal story that separates them into the all-time elite of Hogs.
The nomination process is simple. Fill out the on-line questionnaire or download the paper version of the form to mail or fax back to the Razorback Athletic Department. Nominations selected by the 100 Years of Razorbacks committee will be contacted for further details and after review are chosen for individual months of the coming year.
